QR Code Forever

Transparent QR code generator

Make a transparent QR code that drops onto a card, flyer or web banner without a white box around it. The code is static, so it never expires and nothing routes through a server. It is free with no sign-up, made entirely in your browser, and verified by a real scanner before you download it.

Content: URL

The full address of the page. https:// is added if you leave it out.

Off by default. When on, each downloaded code (type, content, style) is saved in this browser only, never uploaded. You can delete them at any time.

How to make a transparent QR code

  1. Paste the link into Website address; the generator adds https:// if it is missing.
  2. Transparent background is already switched on for this page. Turn it off if you decide you want a solid Background colour after all.
  3. Keep Foreground colour dark. The contrast checker compares it with white, because the surface you will place the code on is not known yet.
  4. Wait for Verified: scans as URL, then use Download PNG or Download SVG. Both keep the transparency; JPG cannot.

Transparent QR code details

With Transparent background on, the generator draws only the dark modules and leaves everything else empty. In the PNG that means an alpha channel: real transparency, not a white square pretending. In the SVG the background rectangle is simply not written, so whatever sits behind the code in your layout shows through. JPG has no alpha channel, so Download JPG fills the background with white, and the PDF draws a page of its own.

Why the checker assumes white

The contrast checker needs two colours to compare. With a transparent background the second colour does not exist yet; it is whatever you place behind the code later. The generator therefore compares the foreground with white, which is the surface a transparent code is meant for. The ratio it reports is only true if the real surface is light: cream, pale grey or a light pastel keeps most of that contrast, and a photograph needs a uniformly pale area behind the code.

Dark backgrounds and inverted codes

A dark code on a dark surface is unreadable, and the obvious fix, switching Foreground colour to white, produces an inverted code: light modules on a dark field. The QR specification allows inversion, but many phone cameras and most barcode apps expect dark on light and refuse to decode it. The generator shows an inverted warning whenever the foreground is lighter than the background. If your design is dark, keep a light panel behind the code, or turn transparency off and give the code a white Background colour.

Checking the finished artwork

Verification decodes the preview as rendered, which for a transparent code means on white. Once the PNG is on your artwork, export a flat image of the finished design and check it with the QR code reader, so the real background is tested too. For the print size, use the size guide.

This code never expires

Transparency only changes the pixels around the modules; the address is still stored inside the code, so it works for as long as that page exists. This is a static QR code: the data is written into the pattern, so scanning it needs no server, no account and no subscription. There is nothing to renew and no redirect that can be switched off, which is why a code made here keeps working for as long as the printed copy exists. The trade-off is honest: a static code cannot be edited after printing and does not count scans. If you need either, encode a link to a page you control. Read how static and dynamic codes differ, and if a code you already have has stopped working, see why QR codes expire.

Styling, formats and print size

Every code can be styled in the Style panel: six dot shapes, corner shapes, solid or gradient colours, a transparent background, a quiet zone of 0–8 modules, and your own logo up to 30 percent of the width. A contrast checker warns below 3:1 and blocks downloads below 1.5:1, and after each change the preview is decoded again so the badge tells you whether the styled code still scans.

OutputBest forNotes
PNGWeb, documents, quick prints256 to 4096 px; transparent background supported
SVGDesigners and print shopsVector, scales without limit; logo embedded
PDFPrinting at an exact sizeVector modules at a chosen width in mm or inches, optional caption
JPGPlatforms that reject PNGWhite background; no transparency
EPSLegacy print workflowsVector from the module matrix, no logo
Copy / PrintPasting into a document; a quick paper testPNG to the clipboard; print view with caption

Print size: as a rule of thumb the code should be at least one tenth of the scanning distance wide, with the quiet zone included.

Scan distanceMinimum width
0.5 m (arm's length)5 cm
1 m10 cm
2 m20 cm
5 m50 cm

Print the code on light stock or over a pale area of the artwork, at least 3 cm wide for a card and 10 cm for something read from a metre away, with a clear margin of four modules around it.

The QR code size guide has a calculator for module size, DPI and distance.

Frequently asked questions

Which formats keep a transparent QR code transparent?

PNG and SVG. The PNG carries an alpha channel, so only the modules are drawn and the rest is empty. The SVG simply has no background rectangle, so whatever is behind it in your layout shows through. JPG has no transparency and is exported on white.

Can I place it on a dark or coloured background?

Only on a light one. A dark code on a dark surface has no contrast, and switching the foreground to white produces an inverted code that many phone cameras refuse to decode. Cream, light grey or a soft pastel work; strong colours need a light panel behind the code.

Why does the contrast checker compare with white?

Because with a transparent background there is no second colour to measure yet; it will be whatever you put behind the code later. The checker treats the background as white, the surface a transparent code is meant for, so its ratio is only accurate on a light surface.

Does transparency affect scanning?

Not by itself. Scanners look for dark modules against a lighter surround, and a transparent PNG on a light surface looks exactly like a normal code. Problems come from what you place it on: a busy photo, a mid-tone colour or a dark field all lower the contrast.

Can I make the modules white and put the code on a black design?

You can, and the generator will warn that the code is inverted. The standard permits light-on-dark codes, but many phone cameras and scanning apps only look for dark-on-light patterns and will not read it. Give the code its own light panel and keep the modules dark.

Does the transparent SVG work in design tools?

Yes. Figma, Illustrator, Inkscape and Affinity Designer open it as a group of paths with nothing behind them, so you can lay it over artwork and see the result immediately. Keep the quiet zone empty and export a flat image to check with the QR code reader.
